Housed in a 600 square foot tiki hut, the museum takes
visitors on an educational journey into the world of shell animals, known
as Mollusks, exploring their life cycles and native habitats.
Exhibits include major shell families, Florida shells, state
shells, and unique cultural relationships shared with particular shells.
Visitors will also gain a better understanding of the family
classifications of over 100,000 known shell species.
Additional rotating specialty exhibits are provided and maintained
by members of the Central Florida Shell Club.
The purpose of the museum is to educate visitors about
shell collecting, one of Florida’s favorite pastimes. The goal of the
museum is to create and encourage interest in shell collecting among all
ages. Designed with the
beginning shell enthusiast in mind, all exhibits will discuss their
subject using clear, easy to understand terminology.
Private lectures and presentations will be available to both
academic and special interest groups.
Admission to the museum will be free and is open daily from
9am to 10pm.
“People have a natural curiosity about
the sea and its fascinating inhabitants”, said Shell World owner Jim
Crant. “With our new museum, we hope to be able to show our visitors
some of the intriguing aspects of the seashell world.
Our idea is to display the beauty of form and color that is hidden
in the sea.”
